The main reason people say they are broken is because of Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II (EANM) modules. They are common on armor tanks and since armor already has good em/therm resistance, they get 2x as good of a tank against Amarr as compared to anyone else. (this is one of the reasons AC's are so good too, they do the right damage types against EANM tanks.
For close range weapons I think both autocannons and blasters are better (because of tracking as well as the less dependancy on cap).
For long range weapons and capacitor Amarr have the best ships. Their snipers do the most dps (although the rokh's range bonus kinda trumps dps).
The beam weapon and capacitor superiority become especially apperent in the capital ships. Revelation with beams does the most dps of all dreads at all ranges (provided they are also using their long range weapons. Also, the Archon carrier has a great capacitor.

And yet it still can't keep up with a Revelation. There's 2 reasons. First reason is that beams do significantly more dps than both howitzers and capital launchers. Second reason is that damage modules on a rev affect 3 guns, damage mods on the Nag affect 2.
Perhaps a Nag with a shield tank (so low slots can be used for dmg mods) and setup for only close range (no range mods being used) could out damage a Rev but otherwise it's a pretty uphill battle. CCP: please fix the asteroids in the new regions.

Pretty sure you haven't checked the numbers... damage multiplier / rate of fire is higher on dual giga beams than any other long range dread weapon. Since Revelation also gets a damage bonus and no other dreads get more than 1 damage bonus that's all you need to take into account.
I'm telling you dps without considering resists of what you're shooting. iirc @ 150 km, moros gets 1800 dps and revelation gets 2500. It's not even close. @ 200 km, rev still wins by a large margin. At 50 km... (provided everyone uses their long range guns) rev wins again at around 3500 dps.

I can get 1455 dps out of a Hyperion. Granted AC's are better vs Armor and Blasters are better vs Sheilds but Blasters are pretty good vs both sheilds and armor.
Overall I like the Maelstrom more than Hyperion (because of the rate of fire bonus that they can have without affecting cap usage of guns) but when it comes to killing a battleship as fast as possible, I don't think any BS can match the Hyperion.

Funny how I get 1455 then isn't it? I'm using 4 MFS, 8 neutrons, void ammo. 5% damage implant. 4 ogres.
With rigs I bet I break 1500 dps but haven't tried it yet.

Edited by: Sir Bart on 02/06/2007 04:50:49 Dunno if quick fit calc's the rigs proper but with 3 mfs and 1 t2 rig, I get ... 1534 dps against 0 resists.
I have the skills all maxed execpt large spec (which is 4).
Edit: fixed calcs with rigs that actually fit on there. :) CCP: please fix the asteroids in the new regions.
